Chaitra, a 27-year-old woman from Javamanadotti, Ramanagara district, faced an unimaginable loss when her husband passed away in 2022. She lived with her supportive parents-in-law, her brother-in-law, and her young daughter. Despite the wealth and agricultural background of her family, which ensured her basic needs were met, the emotional aspects of her life became challenging. From early on, she  focused on staying strong for her family, taking on household responsibilities and caregiving duties. Before her husband's death, Chaitra was introduced to Self Shakti through an Anganwadi teacher. She completed the program, got selected as the Gelathi (Community Anchor) for her village, but did not pursue the Spoorthi Fellowship due to her personal circumstances. However, in December 2023, she was determined to reclaim her life, she enrolled in the Spoorthi Fellowship Program, completing it in May 2024.

Chaitra dedicated herself to learning and growing, even in the face of personal tragedy. The fifth module taught her how to resolve conflicts amicably with patience and active listening. This was particularly relevant as tensions arose in her home regarding expenses, after her brother-in-law got married. Chaitra recognised the need to contribute to the household financially to foster harmony. "If I can contribute, I can avoid direct conflicts and maintain peace at home,” she explained thoughtfully.

In October 2024, she landed a job as a school attendant, a position she secured through connections from a self-help group she actively participated in. This job not only provided her with an income of Rs. 5,000 per month but also brought her a sense of independence. Chaitra took to walking to work to save money on transport. She began saving Rs.1,000 a month in SHG to invest in her future and her daughter's education. Chaitra was determined to rise further, seeking better job opportunities and financial stability. "I don't want to spend unnecessarily anymore. Every bit saved is for my daughter's better future," she shared with conviction.

Chaitra often felt belittled and undermined, especially regarding household expenses. However, since she started contributing financially, her confidence blossomed. She took pride in her contributions and skills. "I want to ensure my family stays united, but I will not compromise my self-respect," she stated emphatically.

Chaitra is now confident to occupy spaces because she feels confident after earning an income. She’s a woman driving change for herself and soon for other women like her!
